IRON CROSS 2nd Class 1939, a nice early piece with ring maker marked 13 (Gustav Brehmer, Markneukirchen/Sa), together with award document to Unteriffizier Schuette, 4./Inf.Batl.540, awarded in the Field 9 February 1943 and signed by Generalmajor und Kommandeur de 21. Inf. Division. General Gerhard Matzky. Matzky was a career soldier, enlisring in 1912 as a Fahnenjunker. He had attained the rank of Oberleutnant by the end of the First World War and had been awarded both the Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class, as well as a silver wound badge and the Hamburg Hansiatic Cross. He continued his service throughout the 1920’s and 30’s and by the outbreak of World War two he held the rank of Oberst (Colonel), being promoted to Genelalmajor in 1941, Generalleutnant in 1943 and General der Infantry in 1944. For his serviced during WWII he received the Spange to his Iron Crosses 1sr & 2nd Class, the War Merit Cross 1st & 2nd Class and the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross on 5 April 1944. His service in the Army did not end with World War Two, in 1957, he was appointed Generalleutnant in the Bundeswehr and in 1967 was awarded the Grand Cross of the German Federal Order. Comes together with a portrait picture of Matzky and a picture of him at a situation conference with Hitler in 1941. Very Fine condition.
